Planting Guide

Sun and Space: It is important to consider location when choosing plants for your landscape. Consider how large the plant will be when mature and what lighting conditions it needs.

Ground preparation:

Digging the hole: Make the hole about three times the size of the root ball of the plant. Filling the space with improved soil will benefit root growth.

Add amendments: Most soil is not ideal for landscape gardening. Add needed amendments to the soil and set aside soil for backfill. Peat moss, humus or compost are recommended.

Backfill the bottom of the hole: Make sure that the top of the root ball or potting soil will be slightly above the surrounding soil once planting is complete.

Water: Add water to ensure the soil is moist

Plant Preparation:

Remove the pot: Do this just before you plant. It is best to keep the roots covered until planting time.

Gently pinch and spread the roots: Plants grown in pots can become root bound. Spreading the roots encourages healthier growth.

Center the plant in the hole

Backfill: Use the prepared soil to fill the hole.

Water: Watering thoroughly at planting time helps avoid stress and shock to the plant.

Mulch: Use wood chip or bark mulch to aid water retention, suppress weeds, and improve appearance.
